Dick was born November 10, 1938 in Minneapolis, Minnesota.  He graduated from the University of Minnesota. To get away from the cold weather, he moved to Pasadena, California. He worked for Milliman and Robertson, who transferred him to Portland, Oregon to work for the firm there.  Dick then moved to Oakland where he was The Actuary for Blue Cross of California.  From Oakland he moved to Los Angeles  and became a pension actuary.  He worked for Johnson and Higgins, Alexander and Alexander, and finally Buck Consultants, his last position before retirement. He retired in the early 1990s.

Dick and Karen loved to travel. which included cruises to Europe, Russia, and Canada. After he retired he was an assistant teacher at UCLA in the Actuarial department. He also tutored the students after class. His experience at UCLA was a very satisfying use of his actuarial talent.
