In Memory of David Bryan
David Bryan, FSA, FCIA, MAAA, passed away June 28 at the age of 63 at his home in Marietta, Georgia after a long illness. He was born in Stockton–on–Tees, England, the second of four sons of the late Ernest Arthur and Jennie (Hugill) Bryan. He moved to Canada at the age of eight and spent the remainder of his childhood in Quesnel and Langley, British Columbia. Bryan graduated from the University of British Columbia in 1966 with a Bachelor of Science, and moved to Toronto, Ontario where he was employed with the Canada Life Assurance Company. He became a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Fellow of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries in 1972. Bryan was a founding member of the Canada Life US home office, and moved with his family to Atlanta, Georgia in 1980. He retired from Canada Life in 2004.
Bryan had diverse interests: wine–making, long–distance running, curling, duck hunting (only once!), golf, gardening, politics, softball, and small building projects around the house. A brick patio and a tree house were two favorite examples. He played violin and clarinet growing up, which led to an appreciation for a wide range of music, and the encouragement and support of his children's own musical experiences. Photography was a lifelong passion and Bryan leaves behind an extensive photograph collection, many of which he took and developed himself.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Carole (Casselman) Bryan of Marietta, Georgia; daughter Jennifer Clark, son–in–law Edward Clark, and granddaughter Sarah Clark of Birmingham, Alabama; and daughter Joanne Bryan and son–in–law Bo Carr of Decatur, Georgia. He is also survived by three brothers and their families.
