In Memory of William D. Smith
William Daniel Smith, FSA, MAAA, passed away on Jan. 29, 2008 at the age of 81. Born in Jersey City, N.J., Smith retired to Naples, Fla. in 1989 after a distinguished career in the insurance industry.
After serving in the U.S. Army Air Corps, he earned his bachelor's degree from Rutgers University. In 1949, he began his career in the insurance industry working for Prudential Insurance Co. and later the Life Insurance Co. of North American and Philadelphia Life Insurance Co. He retired as vice president and comptroller in 1989 from Provident Mutual Life Insurance Co. in Philadelphia, Penn.
Smith was very active in the actuarial profession, serving as former chairman of the Committee on Annual Statements and Valuation of Assets, A.C.L.I., former president of the Actuaries Club of Philadelphia and chairman of the Education Committee of the Actuaries Club of Philadelphia.
Smith is survived by his sons Douglas (Debby) Smith of Madison, Conn. and Neil (Barbara) Smith of Gurnee, Ill.; sister Jeanne Ege of Venice, Fla.; and grandchildren Kellye, Greg, Dana and Nick. His wife of 55 years, Sylvia MacNeill Smith, preceded him in death in 2006.
