In Memory of David G. Scott
David G. Scott, FSA, former president of Continental Assurance Co., a principal subsidiary of Chicago–based CNA, passed away on May 27, 2009. He was 98.
Scott was born in Ft. McCloud, Alberta on January 11, 1911. His mother died in the great influenza epidemic when he was 8 years old. His father was a railway clerk who never remarried. Scott skipped two grades and graduated from high school at 16. He worked his way through McGill University in Montreal where he majored in mathematics and won their gold medal for French elocution. He became an actuary and worked for a succession of small Canadian insurance companies during the years after attending college.
Scott married the love of his life, Jean Seath Lothian, in 1937. They had four children, Stuart, Christopher, David and Martha. They lived in Wilmette and Winnetka (both in Illinois) from 1945 to 1971. He began his career at Continental as an associate actuary and was president of the company when he retired in 1971. Scott moved to Miami where he worked as an acquisition and restructuring consultant until 1980 when he retired again. In recent years he resided near Washington, D.C. with his daughter Martha and her family.
He is survived by two of his children, Stuart and Martha; his 11 grandchildren; and 10 great–grandchildren.
