In Memory of Martin Zeffert
Martin Zeffert died on October 1, 2003 in Naples, Florida at the age of 78.
Zeffert was born January 12, 1925 in New York City. He was reared there and graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School in 1942. Upon graduation, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps and saw combat duty in the South Pacific during WW II. After his military commitment was completed, he enrolled in the actuarial science program at the University of Iowa where he earned his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees.
After graduation, he was employed by Fidelity Mutual Life Insurance Company in Philadelphia and while there, was instrumental in forming the new Pension Department. He ultimately served as chief actuary of the company. In 1977 he left to join Huggins & Co. (later Hay/Huggins), an actuarial consulting firm in Philadelphia. The actuarial consulting portion was acquired by Ernst & Young.
Zeffert later moved his practice with E&Y to Naples, Florida where he retired from E&Y in 1995. After retirement, he continued a small consulting practice until his untimely death.
Zeffert was a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, a member of the American Academy of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary and a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries. He joined the Southeastern Actuaries Conference in 1990 and was an active participant at meetings over the years. He enjoyed being with fellow actuaries and especially sharing his vast experience and knowledge with younger actuaries.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou and son, David and family.
