Deceased Members–2005
In Memory of Julius Vogel
Julius Vogel, FSA, passed away on October 29, 2005. He was 81 years old.
Born in New York City on January 22, 1924, Vogel received his bachelor's degree from Brooklyn College in 1943 where he was a member of an honorary math fraternity and of the Brooklyn College Honors Society. Vogel began his career as an actuarial student with Prudential Insurance Company and later became the chief actuary at Prudential.
In 1977 Vogel chaired a steering committee appointed by the SOA Board to work with other actuarial bodies in an attempt to streamline and consolidate the profession from then six actuarial bodies to three. Vogel believed that because the missions and objectives of the various organizations were the same, overlapping organizations were not necessary to accomplish them.
As SOA President from 1979-80, Vogel participated in a number of panel discussions. In his presidential address, he emphasized, "As actuaries we have a key role in assuring the long-term survival of our companies, and we should remember ... that in the long run what is best for the public is what is best for the companies; otherwise, the companies will not survive."
There will be a memorial service for Julius Wednesday, November 2 at 2:30 p.m. at Menorah Chapels, 2950 Vauxhall Road, Union, NJ. Following the service, there will be a reception at one of Julius's favorite places, Marco Polo in Summit, NJ.
Vogel is survived by his wife, Corinne.
