In Memory of George B. Swick
George Boice Swick, ASA, a recognized authority on the design and financing of employee benefit programs, died December 15, 2006.
Swick graduated from Dartmouth College in 1949 and began his actuarial career with the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. In 1951 he joined Buck Consultants in New York City. During his 31–year career at Buck, he progressed through a number of senior positions, including chief actuary, chairman of the board and chief executive officer.
Swick became an associate of the Society of Actuaries in 1953. He was a fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries, serving as a director from 1975 to 1982 and president in 1982. He also was a charter member of the American Academy of Actuaries and served on its Board of Governors from 1977 to 1980. Swick qualified as an enrolled actuary and was a founding trustee of the Employee Benefit Research Institute.
Following his retirement, Swick established an actuarial consulting practice specializing in retirement programs and became an adjunct lecturer at Brandeis University. A frequent author and speaker on all aspects of pension matters, he was a pioneer in the development of Monte Carlo techniques for projecting pension plan assets and liabilities.
He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, the former Lois Keast Smith; three daughters, Carolyn, Wendy and Laura; six grandchildren; and two brothers, Thomas and Theodore.
