Position Title: Managing Director, Continuing Education
Department: Continuing Education
Reports to: Deputy Executive Director
Position Summary
Responsible for the growth, expansion and development and execution of high quality continuing education programs that meet the educational needs of the membership. Assist in the development and implementation of the Competency Model that defines skills and competencies necessary for the career development of actuaries. Work with the staff actuaries and others to improve the current programs by raising the quality and quantity to a higher level and provide networking opportunities for actuaries. Responsible for the supervision of the Continuing Education staff and the Customer Service staff to continue to provide seamless events and quality customer service.
Essential Functions
- Using the new Competency Model, staff actuaries and other resources, develops a portfolio of continuing education offerings of the highest quality for the membership. The selection should include technical, business skills and other options best suited for the actuarial career advancement.
- Supervises the work of the CE department and Customer Service departments to include: establishing goals, assigning CE projects and ensuring that performance meets or exceeds expectations.
- Establishes a network to determine new areas of development within the profession around which to build cutting edge CE events.
- Determines and implements the best current and future programs to assist members in meeting the new CPD requirement for the profession.
- Assesses the existing CE partnerships and explores new opportunities for future CE programs to significantly improve our offerings to the membership.
- Negotiates terms of jointly sponsored programs, develops and maintains relationships and drafts the Memo of Understanding in accordance with the contract review process.
- Develops, builds and maintains productive, ongoing partnerships with other organizations for jointly sponsored events.
- Prepares the annual budget for all CE events with the Senior Director of Meetings and Customer Service. Analyzes previous year's expenditures; projects anticipated revenues and expenses; controls expenditures as per budget parameters and approves invoices.
- Consults with the AMS and Basic Education departments in identifying and designing CE events in technical and non technical areas that allow members to use the full array of learning options such as the e–learning platform, seminars, symposia, webcasts and other educational media. Works cooperatively with the Marketing department to prepare and provide for adequate lead time to market all events.
- Creates standards and processes for creating questionnaires and measuring member satisfaction on key events.
- Develops and implements the Continuing Education Agenda for the SOA's Annual and Spring Meetings in accordance with the Competency Model objectives. Works with the Marketing group and CE Managers to ensure speakers have a well run, professional presentation.
- Actively pursues technological advances in Continuing Education to optimize delivery efficiency, effectiveness and "reach" to SOA members. Maximizes the use of the newly developed e–learning platform and investigates other options that are best for our members.
- Acts as liaison to the Joint Board of Enrolled Actuaries and other organizations, as applicable, to maintain SOA status as an approved provider of CE credit. Ensures the maintenance of necessary records.
- Administers, oversees and maintains policies and procedures established by the Board of Directors and provides direction in establishing SOA policies and procedures.
Education and Experience Required (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will considered)
- Masters Degree in Education or the equivalent.
- Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in curriculum design, adult education and planning continuing education programs.
- Ten (10) years experience in management and supervising staff.
- Association experience is preferred.
