Position Title: Experience Studies/Life Practice Research Actuary
Department: Research
Reports to: Managing Director of Actuarial Research
Position Summary
The Experience Studies/ Life Practice Research Actuary enables the Society to conduct and improve mortality and morbidity experience studies and to also advance the Life Practice needs of the Society of Actuaries.
Essential Functions
- Analyzes the need for new experience studies and manages existing and emerging experience studies as determined by key research stakeholders. These stakeholders include insurance companies, consulting firms, SOA Sections, SOA research committees and industry groups (e.g. NAIC, ACLI, LIMRA and others).
- Assists in the following: designing study objectives, content and outputs; preparation of data calls; facilitating the collection of data; updating existing experience studies to reflect current needs.
- Establishes the necessary Experience Studies Committees and other groups as needed to conduct and prepare studies.
- Prepare "Request for Proposals" to help the SOA to determine adequate data vendors to collect, cleanse and compile the data. Troubleshoot problems and ensures a sound, usable, body of data.
- Serve as a principal contact for the Society with respect to experience tables. Work with the appropriate volunteer SOA experience committees to interpret the data and assist in the creation of needed tables. Answers inquiries from members on existing and new study information
- Manage (with the assistance of the experience committees) the final report preparation and transfer of tabular information to the SOA website.
- Serves as liaison to organizations that are interested in mortality and morbidity studies.
- Collaborates with Marketing and Communications to appropriately promote completed studies.
- Manage the process, awareness, and collection of experience study reimbursements from insurance companies and consulting firms to pay for research study activities.
- Plan, lead and facilitate intellectual capital development as a thought leader for life and annuity products, for evolving accounting issues in financial reporting including the impact of move to Principle-Based Accounting and International Financial Reporting Standards, and life reinsurance and capital market solutions.
- Serve as an internal consultant on content issues to SOA's staff on basic education, continuing education, research, and communications and publications for the life area of practice.
- Serve as staff partner to the Financial Reporting, Product Development, and Reinsurance Sections.
Education and Experience Required (an equivalent amount of training, education and experience will considered)
- Bachelor's degree in mathematics, actuarial science, accounting, economics or a related field
- FSA preferred, but ASAs would be considered
- Five years experience Life Insurance Products support, experience retrieval and/or actuarial table preparation or related financial statement preparation
- Five years experience in project management or team leadership
Knowkedge, Skills and Abilities including competencies that may be representative but not all inclusive of those commonly associated with this position.
- Ability to communicate effectively with people and other departments
- Experience in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and other related software tools
- Knowledge of large computer systems and compilation of large bodies of data
Supervisory Responsibilites and Coorindation required to perform the functions of this job.
- This position directly supervises the Experience Studies Actuary and indirectly the Research Administrator.
