Vision Statement:
I am very concerned that over the next ten years the Society of Actuaries will face a significant shortage of volunteers. I believe that our employers are much less supportive of professional volunteer opportunities than in the past. Further, I believe that with the current economic situation, employers will become even less supportive. The Society relies heavily on volunteers. Furthermore, I believe that for many of us, volunteering in the Society has been an important part of our professional and personal development as actuaries. The Society needs to take steps to address this issue. I believe that the value of the Society's volunteers must be communicated directly to employers whose support is critical. I think that the Society must reward effective volunteers with more responsibility quicker. I believe that we must open significant leadership opportunities for effective volunteer leaders. Further, the Society must find ways to directly address ineffective leadership when such a situation occurs. Ineffective leadership wastes the time of the volunteers involved as well as the Society staff.
