Transitions Overview

While every attempt is made to have the posted transition rules be accurate, some candidates have combinations of past exams and modules that are difficult to evaluate, and a self-evaluation may prove to be inconsistent with policies adopted by the SOA’s Board of Directors. If you have concerns about your status, please contact Customer Service at customerservice@soa.org.

The SOA has made many changes to the components of and requirements for the ASA, CERA, and FSA designations. For candidates who have gone through multiple transitions, each credit is sequentially moved through the transitions to arrive at the credit earned in the current system. The links below have done this for components in effect from 2000 onward.

Those with credits earned prior to 2000 should contact Customer Service at customerservice@soa.org.

How Transitions Work

There are two principles that govern transitions.

  • An ASA once earned can only be lost through the SOA’s disciplinary process or through non-payment of dues. Changes to the ASA requirements cannot create additional requirements to maintain the ASA.
  • The requirements for the FSA are the current ASA requirements plus the current post-ASA requirements. For example, if an ASA was previously earned without passing the Predictive Analytics Exam, earning an FSA requires passing this exam.
