Society of Actuaries Welcomes Inaugural Group of University-Earned Credit Participants

Schaumburg, IL, August 4, 2022 – In supporting education efforts and the actuarial profession’s future, the Society of Actuaries (SOA) announced the 13 universities recognized for its University-Earned Credit (UEC) program. Beginning this year, degree-seeking students who participate in approved courses at these universities will be eligible for specific SOA exam credit after obtaining the required score.

These universities include Chinese University of Hong Kong, Drake University, Illinois State University, Macquarie University, St. John’s University, Temple University, University of Hong Kong, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Iowa, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, University of New South Wales, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. There are currently nine universities in the U.S., two in Hong Kong and two in Australia. Each of these universities are SOA Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAE), that also meet the eight criteria and specific requirements of that program.

The UEC program is one of several education components to support the organization’s strategic efforts to provide education globally and to prepare actuaries to be business leaders driving solutions to life’s financial risks. This program focuses on CAE universities that have successfully completed the intensive UEC evaluation process, ensuring their quality, rigor and testing integrity. These university programs are required to apply the standards of the UEC program to their courses. It is the same rigorous standards that the SOA applies to all current examinations.  Other CAE universities may consider applying for the UEC program in the future.

In addition to these programs supporting the SOA’s strategic plan, the organization continues to engage diverse communities to address key societal issues and to build a more diverse actuarial profession. The UEC Diversity Extension is one such effort continuing work to achieve greater diversity within the actuarial profession and in providing education globally.
