SOA Research Institute Announces Winning Teams of 2022 Student Research Case Study Challenge

Schaumburg, IL, May 13, 2022 – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) Research Institute announced the winning submissions of its 2022 Student Research Case Study Challenge.  Actuarial students around the world competed in teams from their universities and colleges to showcase their actuarial skills. The top teams were from Indiana University Bloomington, Towson University in Maryland, and the University of New South Wales, Australia.

Teams of two to five students researched a case study focusing on actuarial math and football (soccer). The teams used predictive analytics, data analysis and probability to construct a fictional competitive soccer team and analyze the impact on the economy. The teams conducted actuarial analysis, formulated solutions, and presented recommendations in a report. This case study competition helps actuarial students highlight their knowledge and math skills, as well as their creativity, cooperation and presentation abilities. Valani Global helped sponsor this year’s case study challenge.

The team from Indiana University received first place with a $5,000 grant for the university. The team from Towson University received second place ($3,000 grant), and the team from the University of New South Wales received third place ($2,000 grant). Students from these three teams each received $500.

The three other finalist teams were from Arizona State University, Nankai University in China and Renmin University China. See the full list of winners, finalists, semi-finalists and all their submissions.
