Society of Actuaries Releases 2023 Diversity Report

Schaumburg, IL, Oct. 9, 2023 – As part of the Society of Actuaries (SOA)'s Long-Term Growth Strategy, fostering a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment is a critical goal to enhance the influence and positive impact of the actuarial profession. Committed to transparency and accountability in its Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, the SOA has been releasing diversity reports since spring 2021.

The SOA firmly believes that all its members and candidates deserve to enjoy full inclusion and equitable opportunities for entry, development, growth, and success within the profession. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) collaborates closely with SOA leadership and staff to drive the actuarial journey forward and it focuses on areas that include nurturing equitable and inclusive experiences, expanding the actuarial talent pipeline by supporting underrepresented groups, and advocating for DEI principles in research to benefit the public.

Since 2015, the SOA has been voluntarily collecting racial, gender, and ethnic demographic data from its members. This data includes both aspiring actuaries and those who hold ASA or FSA designations. The SOA's diversity demographic data offers insights into:

  • The composition of the overall membership as of June 2023, both in the United States and worldwide.
  • New members joining the organization from January 2012 through June 2023 in the United States.
  • Individuals entering the examination pathway as of June 2023 in the United States.
  • Leadership participation figures from June 2018 through June 2023, on a global scale.
  • Comparative data against demographic benchmarks, including the United States population aged 25 and above, employees within the insurance industry, and holders of completed STEM bachelor's degrees.

For further information, please visit the SOA's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion page. We invite all our members and candidates to help improve the accuracy of our candidate and member data by updating their demographic information in their membership profiles.

The SOA remains dedicated to fostering an actuarial profession that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive, committed to excellence and serving the needs of society.
