The Society of Actuaries Announces Seven New Universities with University-Earned Credit Programs

November 29, 2023, Schaumburg, IL – The Society of Actuaries (SOA) has recognized California State University, Los Angeles and the University of Texas at El Paso as University-Earned Credit (UEC) Diversity Extension (DE) programs and five new universities as UEC Centers of Actuarial Excellence (CAEs). The newest UEC CAEs include Australian National University, Brigham Young University, Georgia State University, Pennsylvania State University, and the University of St. Thomas. These seven universities join 14 other universities around the world with this UEC program from the SOA.

UEC Centers of Actuarial Excellence

The UEC CAE program is one of several education components to support the organization’s strategic efforts to provide education globally and to prepare actuaries to be business leaders driving solutions to life’s financial risks. This program focuses on CAE universities that have successfully completed the intensive UEC evaluation process, ensuring their quality, rigor, and testing integrity. These university programs are required to apply the same rigorous standards the SOA applies to examinations to their UEC courses and examinations. There are now 21 universities approved for UEC and offering courses that allow students to make efficient progress on the ASA exam pathway.

UEC Diversity Extension Programs

The UEC DE program is an SOA partnership with select colleges and universities serving high concentrations of students underrepresented in the profession, with a focus on providing opportunities for African American, Black, Hispanic/Latino, and Native North American and Indigenous students. The program uses the course/exam evaluation structure created for the UEC CAE program to ensure education and assessment standards are met. California State University, Los Angeles and the University of Texas at El Paso join Morgan State University, whose program earned UEC DE approval in January 2023.

SOA President and Chair Tim Rozar, FSA, MAAA, CERA, stated, “Adding these new universities to our UEC programs significantly advances our goals of expanding opportunities and preparing the next generation of actuaries to meet the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. We congratulate these universities on their accomplishments and thank them for their ongoing commitment to actuarial education.”
